Madrid 'Landscape of Light' Route

At the scheduled time, we'll meet at Independence Gate in El Retiro Park. From here, we'll start a guided tour of the Landscape of Light. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a part of Madrid full of monuments, museums and beautiful green spaces.

Our tour will begin with a trip back in time to the 16th century, as we'll discuss what life in Madrid was like then and its differences with the present day. We'll discover why this artery of the capital is full of monuments protected as Assets of Cultural Interest as we step into El Retiro Park.

We'll discuss the different stages that El Retiro has gone through. Before being a public place, it was once an area dedicated exclusively to the monarchy and even once as a barracks for French troops. We'll learn all about its history as we see symbolic spots such as the pond, the Glass Palace, the Velázquez Palace and the monument to Alfonso XII.

Afterwards, we'll exit the park via the Felipe IV Gate and continue exploring the Landscape of Light. We'll walk through the Jerónimos neighbourhood, built in the mid-19th century, and admire buildings of great historical relevance such as the Madrid Stock Exchange, the Casón el Buen Retiro and the Royal Spanish Academy.

The next stop will be the Monument to the Fallen, which comemmorates the tragic events that took place in Madrid in 1812. From here, we'll also be able to admire the Paseo del Prado in all its glory. We'll see the Fountain of Neptune, the outside of the Prado Museum and walk to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.

Following 2 hours spent exploring this beautiful and artistic part of Madrid, we'll finish our guided visit by the entrance of the Royal Botanical Garden.
