The Golden Age of Literature Free Tour
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at the Plaza de Santa Ana and set off on a walking tour that will lead us in the footsteps of the legendary Spanish writer Cervantes. We'll also learn about the fascinating historical period he lived in.
First, we'll admire the façade of the Teatro Español, built over one of the most famous open-air comedy theaters from the Spanish Golden Age, the Corral del Príncipe. In front of this building, we'll learn about the rivalry that existed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries between fans of the plays shown at Corral del Príncipe and enthusiasts of the plays of its great opponent, the Corral de la Cruz.
Afterwards, the free tour will take us through the famous neighborhood of Las Letras, passing by the Ateneo de Madrid and the statue of Cervantes in the Plaza de las Cortes. Did you know that this sculpture used to contain a time capsule? We'll tell you what treasures were found here in 2009!
After admiring the exterior of the basilica of Cristo de Medinaceli, we'll stroll along two of the most emblematic streets: Cervantes street and Lope de Vega street. We'll see the facades of the houses of these famous writers and we'll explain the origins of the tremendous rivalry that arose between these two geniuses.
After approximately two hours of sightseeing, we'll finish the free tour next to the convent of the Trinitarias Descalzas. Is it true that Miguel de Cervantes is buried here?
