Excursion to Segovia, el Escorial and The Valley of the Fallen
The architecture of El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen, the historical heritage of Segovia... Don't miss these jewels just outside Madrid.
Segovia, Escorial and The Valley of the Fallen Excursion Itinerary
We leave the Spanish capital at 9 am in the direction of the Madrid Sierra mountain range, arriving at the San Lorenzo de El Escorial Monastery after an hour long journey.
Here we'll take a guided tour of the interior of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, giving the answers to questions such as 'which kings are buried in the Royal Pantheon?' 'which were the favourite rooms of the Asturian and Bourbon monarchs?' and 'how many books are there in the Royal Library?'
Only 10 minutes from El Escorial can be found The Valley of the Fallen. In this great monument, we'll enter the basilica, upon which sits a giant cross, dominating the whole Cuelgamuros Valley, as well as hearing anecdotes from the Spanish Civil War which give context to the historical site.
From here we'll return to Madrid, giving you free time to have lunch. Then at 3 pm we meet again to make our way to Segovia, the Castilian city where you can enjoy a walking tour through its old town. The centre of the city has much more to offer than its famous aqueduct!
To better understand the history of Castilla we'll make a guided tour of the interior of the fortress. What surprises will the royal residences of this old palace-fort offer us? Then with the visit to the fortress over, the tour finally returns to Madrid for around 8 pm.
Optional Lunch
If you would like, you can complete your day with a traditional Castillian lunch in Madrid. The menu includes various typical dishes which will allow you to enjoy the delicious tastes of Spanish cuisine.
